چکیده
Abstract The head-on collision between electrostatic shocks is studied via multi-dimensional Particle-In-Cell simulations. A strong magnetic field develops after the interaction, which causes shock velocities to drop significantly. This transverse generated by Weibel instability, driven pressure anisotropies due longitudinal electron heating while approach each other. possibility explore physics underpinning in laboratory with current laser facilities discussed.

Electromagnetic Shocks in Strong Magnetic Fields
The nonlinear properties of electromagnetic waves traveling through a magnetized vacuum is of particular interest in the study of neutron stars. Heisenberg and Euler [1] and Weisskopf [2] first derived nonlinear corrections to the Maxwell equations of the electromagnetic field. Lutzky and Toll [3] and Zheleznyakov and Fabrikant [4] applied the weak-field expansion to show that shock waves can d...
متن کاملVery high Mach-number electrostatic shocks in collisionless plasmas.
The kinetic theory of collisionless electrostatic shocks resulting from the collision of plasma slabs with different temperatures and densities is presented. The theoretical results are confirmed by self-consistent particle-in-cell simulations, revealing the formation and stable propagation of electrostatic shocks with very high Mach numbers (M>>10), well above the predictions of the classical ...
متن کاملMagnetic Field Evolution in Relativistic Unmagnetized Collisionless Shocks
We study relativistic unmagnetized collisionless shocks using unprecedentedly large particle-in-cell simulations of two-dimensional pair plasma. High energy particles accelerated by the shock are found to drive magnetic field evolution on a timescale & 10 plasma times. Progressively stronger magnetic fields are generated on larger scales in a growing region around the shock. Shock-generated mag...
متن کاملThe Upstream Magnetic Field of Collisionless Grb Shocks
Gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow emission is believed to be produced by synchrotron emission of electrons accelerated to high energy by a relativistic collisionless shock propagating into a weakly magnetized plasma. Afterglow observations have been used to constrain the post-shock magnetic field and structure, as well as the accelerated electron energy distribution. Here we show that X-ray after...
متن کاملSteady-state Electrostatic Layers from Weibel Instability in Relativistic Collisionless Shocks
It is generally accepted that magnetic fields generated in the nonlinear development of the transverse Weibel instability provide effective collisionality in unmagnetized collisionless shocks. Recently, extensive two and three dimensional simulations improved our understanding of the growth and saturation of the instability in colliding plasma shells. However, the steady-state structure of the ...
